Pitt absent from Penn State's 2020 schedule; 3 new opponents added
UNIVERSITY PARK -- Penn State has released its 2020 non-conference schedule and area football fans will notice one longtime rival missing from the list.
The Pitt versus Penn State matchup will not extend beyond the 2019 season, according to the schedule released Monday by the program.
The Nittany Lions will add Nevada, Virginia Tech and San Jose State to the 2020 slate, to go with nine mandatory Big Ten Conference matchups.
After a 16-year hiatus, Penn State and Pitt rebooted the series in 2016 with the Panthers winning the first matchup at Heinz Field. The Nittany Lions evened the series last season at Beaver Stadium and will look forward to a 2018 game in Pittsburgh followed by the finale in Happy Valley in 2019.
Speaking on Dec. 28, 2017 ahead of the Fiesta Bowl, Penn State Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour said there were talks of extending the series but no progress was made.
Nevada will visit Beaver Stadium on Sept. 5, 2020 for the season opener. The Lions will then travel to Blacksburg to take on the Hokies on Sept. 12 followed by a home game against San Jose State on Sept. 19. This will be the first-ever matchups against these three programs.
Penn State has also added a 2024 game against Bowling Green.
