Toys for Tots provides toys for 3,100 Lancaster Co. families

With a smile on her face, Octavia Williams picks out presents for her two young children.

The mom of two is just one of thousands of families in Lancaster County in need this holiday season.

“ I wish that I was able to provide more for them. Programs like this, it really means a lot to people that do not have," Williams said.

Toys for Tots will provide presents for about 3,100 families this year, just in Lancaster County.

“We have small teddy bears, we have almost anything you could think of, basketballs, we have make up kits, you name it we have it," Toys for Tots coordinator Bobby Birk said.

The whole experience starts when parents walk in the door. From there, they're able to choose a book, a puzzle, stocking stuffers and a stuffed animal for their child.

Then they move into the toy room where they actually get to pick out the presents for their child.

“ I got him some slime, I got him a cool puzzle and I got him a bunch of Kinect toys and I got my daughter a huge Tweety Bird so they’re definitely blessed," Williams said.

But in order to provide that magical moment for families all across Lancaster County, it starts with the community.

The Lancaster chapter says donations are down and they could end up purchasing about $15,000 more in toys.

They're asking the community to help fill the void, especially for the youngest and oldest age groups.

“Anything that makes noise and lights up children love anything bright noisy," Birk describes for children 0-2 years.

But for the older kids, ages 9-12, she suggests "Some do the perfume sets, toiletries like that, curling irons, basketballs and games, older games.”

If you can't donate toys, the organization says monetary donations can be made through their website.
