Caller claiming to be Franklin Co. Sheriff Deputy, frauds 68 year-old of $4,000

A 68-year-old man from Franklin County was scammed out of $4,000 when he was contacted by a person pretending to be the Franklin County Sheriff Deputy.

The suspect told the victim in order to avoid criminal prosecution he had to send money orders/gift cards.

The victim sent nearly $4,000 in Green Dot MoneyPak cards.

Pennsylvania State Police urge the public to be cautious when asked to pay bills with gift cards or money transfers, as it could be a scam.
