Boy killed near bus stop identified

Authorities have identified the 7-year-old boy killed near a bus stop in Franklin Township.

The Huntingdon County coroner said Nicholas Woomer died of blunt force trauma after being hit by a vehicle Thursday just after 7 a.m. The death was ruled accidental.

According to state police, Woomer was found unresponsive along Huntingdon Furnace Road by a bus driver in the area. Police said the boy was boy was run over, likely by a slow-moving vehicle.

Woomer was pronounced dead the same day, according to an incident report.

Police said a truck was making a delivery to a nearby home around the time the child was waiting for the bus and hit. Officers said the truck was towed and processed for evidence.

Authorities said forensic units are working to determine how or if the vehicle hit the child.

Tyrone Area School District Superintendent Cathy Harlow said Woomer is a second-grade student at Tyrone Elementary School.

The district posted a statement on its Facebook page following the incident:

On-site counseling is being provided by district personnel and additional crisis resources for students who are aware of the situation as well as staff. We will share more information as we process through this tragic situation.

A GoFundMe account was created to help Woomer's family pay for funeral expenses. So far, the account has exceeded its original goal of $15,000.

A local church said its sanctuary will be open for prayer Friday night for those who wish to pray for the family and community impacted by the child's death.
