WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) - With this South Florida cold snap comes a major warning from Florida law enforcement officials; don’t warm up your car in the driveway.

Not only is this a safety hazard but it also makes you a prime target for thieves, like in North Florida where deputies say someone stole a man’s car right out front of his home while he was warming it up.

In some states, including Maryland, Virginia and Michigan, it’s actually illegal to leave the leave your car running unattended.

Idling a car in a garage, even with a door open, is also dangerous and exposes the driver and family members to carbon monoxide.

If the garage is attached to the home, those deadly fumes could creep in, posing a serious threat.

While it may not make for the most comfortable or warmest ride, auto experts say drivers really only need to give their vehicle about 30 seconds of idle time before pulling off.
