Adams Co. woman accused of attempting to poison children

Reported by: Christina Butler

Authorities in Adams County say a mother poisoned her toddler son with Visine.  Her other son, 1, also became ill when he drank from his brother's bottles.

Samantha Unger, 23, now lives in Maryland.  Police say in March and April of 2014, she purposely put Visine in the water and juice bottles of her 3-year-old son.

"It was enough that it was poison," says District Attorney Shawn Wagner.

The toddler was hospitalized twice.  One time he required helicopter transport from Gettysburg Hospital to Hershey Medical Center.

The boy's heart rate dropped to 40 at one point. "The doctor told us...he won't make it. It was horrible. It was tough," says Stacey Unger. She's the boys' paternal grandmother.

Doctors and specialists were able to find and trace the chemical in the boy's system to Visine. Bottles were tested and the drug found.

Unger's bail was set at $50,000 last month.

We're told both of the boys are healthy.
