Grilling for a living as your next job

The 4th of July holiday is a huge time for grilling, so what about getting paid to stand there with the spatula? A local BBQ guru is hiring now, and here's the rub: The secret to success is in the rub.

Felton Monroe of Mel's BBQ tells said the rub better be good.

"This is the magic right here, our dry rub is our key ingredient," Monroe said.

He started Mel's in the Broad Street Market in Harrisburg within the last year, after selling funnel cakes and lemonade at the same location. The place is named not after the owner, but instead his daughter, and in a special way, his uncle.

"My father died when I was a kid, so he was a father figure for me, and my brother to help raise us," Monroe said. "He wasn't able to have kids either so, very sentimental. Excellent cook. Still does it now. He has a bed and breakfast out in Chicago."

Taking on the heat

Monroe wants to hire some folks to work at the stand inside, and also the smoker outside. For both positions he wants energetic people with good personalities to bring customers in.

However, you need to be ready for the heat. The smoker is very hot, and if you add in the sun during the summer, you have the makings for some serious sweat.

"There's no doubt about it, I was big when I started man, I'm slimming a little bit," Monroe said.

Sir Mix-A-Lot would like this job

Preparing food in the slow smoker takes patience, and time management skills because you can be cooking all of this at once.

"Chicken 3 to 4 hours, pork, 12 hours, pork butts, 12 hours. Ribs 4 to 6 hours," Sweat said.

Yes, that's not a misprint. He said "butts."

Monroe explained, while pointing at the aptly shaped piece of meat, "This is going to be a pork shoulder, commonly known as a pork butt. People call it a butt, because when you put them together it looks like a butt. but it's really a shoulder."

Still think you're cut out for this? Mel's is looking to pay $9 to $10 an hour for sales positions. Cooks can earn $10 to $12 an hour. These are part time positions for 24-32 hours a week.

Monroe says there is a perk though, admitting, "You take a shower, come out still smelling like BBQ!"
