ROY, Utah (KUTV) The death of a one-month-old Roy baby has led to charges against a man accused of punching the child in head repeatedly in a fit of anger.

Roy Police were dispatched to the home of Matthew Graves, 23, near 4400 South 1950 W. on September 7 when the one-month old child had stopped breathing.

According to court documents, the child was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital where doctors called police after seeing fractures, brain swelling, broken vertebrae and tissue damage.

Roy Police confirmed the child died. A murder charge against Graves was filed last week.

“[Graves] was interviewed at the hospital and admitted that he had gotten angry because the infant was crying and punched him repeatedly in the head,” a Roy Police officer wrote in a probable cause statement. “[Graves] stated that he could not remember how many times he hit the infant as he blacked out from rage. [Graves] made comments that he is a monster, that he has lost all hope in life and is going to lose everything.”

Police reported finding drugs in Grave’s home. Investigators allege Graves told them he smoked drugs in the home where he was living with the children.

The probable cause statement does not specify Grave’s relationship to the child.

Court documents state Graves has been appointed a public defender and will appear in court on Thursday. He is being held at the Weber County Jail without bail.

KUTV contacted authorities in Weber County for more information on the case. Relevant updates will be posted as soon as they become available.
