SCI-Somerset says inmate found dead in cell
SOMERSET – An inmate was found dead in his cell at the State Correctional Institution at Somerset Tuesday, acting superintendent Melissa Hainsworth said.
At approximately 11 a.m., officials said a corrections officer making routine rounds in the restricted housing unit discovered inmate Joshua Perry, 25, unconscious in his cell.
Medical staff were called and two registered nurses confirmed the inmate’s death, officials said in a news release.
Perry was serving a five-year, six-month to 11-year sentence for aggravated assault and serious bodily injury and endangering the welfare of children in York County.
He had been housed at SCI-Somerset since March 30, 2016.
State police and the Department of Corrections are investigating the death.
Authorities said next of kin have been notified.
A news conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss the inmate's death.
