Expert says York Co. to remain strong manufacturer despite Harley Davidson cuts
Big layoffs were announced at the Harley Davidson plant in York County today.
Industry experts say this isn't a doomsday for manufacturing. Kevin Schriber with the Economic Alliance says York County is still a leader in manufacturing.
Schriber is confident that despite these cuts, Harley will remain a strong employer in York County.
Harley Davidson produced three bikes at the plant in York but they were duplicating production of one model in Kansas City, Missouri.
Harley says by moving the manufacturing of the cruiser strictly to Missouri, they are able to reduce costs and eliminate redundancy.
John Lloyd from Mantech says,"They've got competition from across the globe. They need to be able to remain competitive."
Lloyd and his firm know the importance of competition firsthand. The firm consults with manufacturers about innovations.
With advancing technology, Lloyd says York is moving in the right direction.
The employees whose positions were cut can apply to be hired at the facility in Kansas City. The York Economic Alliance says they're here to help anyone who was affected by these cuts.
