Blair County Rep. introduces bill to offer depression screenings for students
HARRISBURG - During a news conference Tuesday, state Rep. Judy Ward (R-Blair) introduced a depression screening bill for students.
Ward and Rep. Dan Miller (D-Mt. Lebanon) crafted the bi-partisan measure that would provide depression screening for students grades sixth and 11th graders to identify and treat depression issues.
"I think the addition of a mental health screening to identify depression, when we know how many people today are afflicted with mental health issues, is a wise addition to every child’s health care," said Ward.
Ward said parents would have the opportunity to option their child out of the screening and that results would be shared with the parents and not the school. The bill has been referred to the House Education Committee.
