Pittsburgh-based GNC to launch new brand with Super Bowl ad

GNC Holdings, the Pittsburgh-based vitamin and nutritional supplement retailer, plans to advertise during the Super Bowl as part of its relaunch as One New GNC.

The company, whose stores are now known just as GNC, says this is the first time it will advertise during the game. Thirty-second ad spots are expected to cost up to $5 million for the Feb. 5 game televised by Fox.

Bob Moran, the company's interim CEO, says the ad buy will be a "substantial investment" for the brand.

The company is coming off a tough year in which sales have lagged and CEO Mike Archbold was let go in July. The company's latest earning's report, in October, showed net income of $147.1 million, down $30 million from the same quarter as last year.
